Denver is the capital of and most-populous city in Colorado. It is located on the western edge of the High Plains at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and is nick-named “The Mile High City” because the 15th step at the west entrance to the state capitol is exactly one mile above sea level.
Denver is a consolidated city and county and the population of the greater Denver metropolitan area is over 3million. It was founded in 1858, during the Pikes Peak Gold Rush and enjoyed a raucous reputation as a cow town with an abundance of saloons and gambling halls. Today, Denver is known as the “Queen City of the Plains” because of its elegance, extensive park system, vibrant arts and entertainment venues and healthy economy.
Many Evergreen residents drive to Denver for their work via two limited-access 4-lane highways: I-70 on the north and US Hwy 285 on the south. Commute times range from 30 minutes to nearly an hour; the drive from Evergreen to Denver International Airport on the eastern edge of Denver is a little over an hour.
