In the middle ages, it was customary for a person of nobility to appoint a ‘champion’ to fight for them in their stead.  Trial by combat ended around the 16th century, but the practice of ‘fighting’ or speaking on one’s behalf continues to this day.

Lawyers take up their clients’ causes to win justice for them.  Professional athletes are recruited to help their team achieve victory.  Superior craftsmen of every stripe are in high demand because their finished product is better.

Sellers’ and buyers’ objectives are different and usually opposing in nature.  In most situations there are two brokers involved in a single sale.  While there are sometimes legal agency distinctions, it is commonly felt that the agent on each side of the transaction is ‘championing’ their clients’ cause.  It is natural to want your champion to be the most capable person available.
