Have a Septic System? This New Jeffco Rule Change Could Affect You
New On-Site Wastewater Rules Effective June 15
Jefferson County, Colo. – Rules for septic systems have been updated in Jefferson County and took effect last June 15.
An onsite wastewater treatment system (OWTS), commonly known as a septic system, treats wastewater from homes in areas without public sewers to protect groundwater from contamination with sewage. These new rules update local septic system requirements to align with recent changes to state law, make them easier to understand and help protect public health and water quality in our county. They were developed with input from industry experts, property owners and community partners.
Updates to the regulations include:
- New septic system requirements based on property size and treatment needs.
- Septic system service providers must be licensed by Jefferson County.
- Property line setback requirements may be reduced for some repair projects.
- Holding tanks (vaults) may be used for full time residences with an approved operating permit.
- Some septic systems may need to be enhanced before a property can be sold or transferred.
- Older wood, metal and cinderblock septic tanks will no longer be allowed. If any found, replacement will be required.
In August, the Jefferson County Board of Health (BOH) will review related policies to make sure they match the new regulations. This review does not reopen or change the regulations.
More information and resources will be shared over the coming months.
